Thurrock Church Brasses

As part of our HLF funded project, volunteers undertook a research trip, visiting a number of Essex locations associated with the highly decorated nurse, Kate Evelyn Luard.

We began in Aveley, looking at the location of the now lost rectory where she was born and lived for many years with her twelve brothers and sisters. She left Aveley 1887 to attend Croydon High School Girls .

We moved on to Birch, where her father became vicar in 1892 and where he is buried in the churchyard. The church is now redundant and in need of repairs.

We then moved on to Wickham Bishops where we were able to look at Abbotts, the home to which she retired and in which she lived with two of her sisters.
We walked cross the road from Abbotts to St. Bartholomew’s, the parish church for Wickham Bishops where she was buried after her death in 1962, close to the graves of her two sisters.
